Member Story: Andrew Izzet Lee, Social Impact Manager, DLA Piper
1. How did you get into CR&S, and why did you choose this profession?
It’s a bit of a personal reason. I’m from a neighbourhood in East London known for social deprivation and systemic inequality. Growing up, I knew I wanted to do something to contribute to a better society. I didn’t quite know what that looked like in practice, though.
At a previous employer, I had a great role (in knowledge management) but often engaged in CSR and DEI initiatives. I knew I wanted to be more involved in this space and, when an opportunity appeared for the CSR team, made an internal switch.
2. What are the most essential skills for working in CRS?
To name a few, I would say: practicality, rationality, relationship management, project management, communication, setting and managing expectations, a willingness to always learn, an understanding of measuring and reporting progress and impact, prioritisation, and attention to detail.
This space is fast-moving and ever-changing so it’s important to have the skills to adapt to different scenarios. I think being passionate is to be expected but you need to be able to deliver effectively in practice. That’s where these skills come into use.
3. What advice would you give to others on getting into CR&S?
There isn’t really a right or wrong way to enter the profession. I’ve taken a journey which contrasts to many others who have different sector experience and academic achievements.
I think anybody, whether looking for an entry-level role or aiming to switch careers, needs to tell a story. It’s helpful to explain what you care about but also what skills you have to support the employer to make change.
