A practical agenda for sustainability leadership in Europe

Executive Summary

Is European corporate sustainability in retreat?

Their research suggests a more nuanced interpretation: sustainability is not disappearing but appears to be undergoing a pragmatic recalibration. This is a qualified conclusion drawn from a heterogeneous evidence base, not a statistically representative measure of all European companies.

EASP reviewed 33 national and international studies, tested their findings through interviews with sustainability professionals from several European countries and sectors, and enriched the
conclusions through live webinar discussions.

A clear message emerged. Sustainability is being asked to prove its relevance to the business by:
• addressing material risks and opportunities;
• supporting competitiveness and resilience;
• informing investment and operational decisions;
• delivering measurable environmental and social outcomes;
• building credibility through evidence and transparent dialogue.

The practical implications are equally clear:
Risk management. Business value. Strategic regulatory management. Tailored approaches.
• Know the business and its value chain inside out.
• Connect sustainability to real business problems.
• Equip leaders with the right mindset, skillset and toolset.
• Make progress without waiting for perfection.
• And when communicating externally, follow a simple rule: no data, no claim.

The next phase of European sustainability will not be defined by how many commitments companies make. It will be defined by their ability to turn material priorities into business decisions, measurable impact and long-term resilience. That is the agenda beyond backlash.
